What Is Barberton Chicken?

Barberton chicken is also known as Serbian fried chicken. It’s a variety of fried chicken that originated in Barberton, Ohio. Usually, the whole chicken is used, but you can just use the breasts if you’d prefer. Eggs, flour, and breadcrumbs are added to the chicken, along with seasoning – before being deep-fried. It’s usually paired with hot sauce and coleslaw, and we’ll be seeing how to make those too.

1) Barberton Chicken Recipe

The recipe we’re looking at today is inspired by a recipe from Today.com and it has the most incredible Barberton Style Fried Chicken. The seasoning for this recipe is amazing, but it’s worth noting that the flavors are quite intense!

Ingredients

The ingredients you’ll need for this recipe are:

Chicken

  • 4 chicken breasts (cut into chunks)
  • 3 cups of buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons of sriracha
  • 3 tablespoons of salt
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons of black pepper
  • 3 beaten eggs
  • 2-3 cups of panko
  • vegetable oil (to fry)

Seasoning

  • 3 tablespoons of cayenne
  • 4 tablespoons of paprika (smoked)
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar (brown)
  • 1 tablespoon of chile powder
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 2 tablespoons of garlic (minced)
  • 1/3 cup of hot oil

Now all you need to do is:

Step 1: Prepare the chicken

Grab a zip-top bag and add two teaspoons of salt, alongside the buttermilk, Sriracha, and chicken. Give it a shake and ensure that the chicken is coated well. Place in the refrigerator and leave for around two hours.

Step 2: Bread the chicken

Grab a bowl (try to use a shallow bowl if possible) and add the pepper, one teaspoon of salt, and the flour. Stir well. In another bowl, add the eggs (ensure they’re beaten first). And in the last bowl, add your breadcrumbs. Place them in a line so it’s easy to work with each bowl. First, place your chicken in the flour, and shake. Then place into the egg (ensure it’s completely covered) and then place into the breadcrumbs. The entire chicken breast should be coated. Repeat until all the chicken is breaded.

Step 3: Fry the chicken

Using a deep pot or fryer, heat your oil until it reaches around 350F. Place each chicken breast into the fryer and fry for around 5-6 minutes. Ensure the juices run clear from the chicken and the outside has a golden brown color.

Step 4: Make the seasoning

Using all of the seasoning ingredients, add to a bowl and mix well.

Step 5: Serve

Place each piece of fried chicken into the bowl of seasoning and your fried chicken is now ready to serve! You can serve your chicken with a dip of your choice.

2) Barberton Chicken Hot Sauce Recipe

Now for the Barberton hot sauce! This recipe is inspired from Just a Pinch.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup of onion
  • 1/4 cup of celery
  • 1 can of whole tomatoes
  • 1 can of tomato juice (plus 6oz)
  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 cup of long-grain white rice

Now all you need to do is:

Step 1: Prepare the veg

Peel your onion and dice until you have fine pieces. Wash your celery and remove the strings before cutting. Once the strings are removed, dice until you have fine pieces.

Step 2: Cook the veg

Melt the shortening into a pan (a saute pan would be best). Once melted, add the onions and cook until soft (you do not want them to brown, they should be translucent). This should take a few minutes. Now add the celery and saute for a further few minutes. Now add your can of tomatoes. You can add some water at this point if you’d like. Stir well.

Step 3: Simmer

Next add the salt, pepper, and sugar, alongside the red pepper flakes. Mix well and then put your pan onto the lowest setting and leaving to simmer for around ten minutes, covered.

Step 4: Cook the rice

Rinse your rice and then add to your pan. Mix well and recover, leaving a small gap for the steam to rise. Leave for around 15 minutes and the rice should be cooked and there shouldn’t be much liquid left. Season again if needed, and add more tomato juice if needed.

Step 5: Serve

Mix well and your sauce is now ready to serve!

3) Barberton Chicken Coleslaw Recipe

This Barberton coleslaw recipe is the perfect side dish to accompany the chicken.

Ingredients

  • cabbage (small head)
  • 1/3 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Recipe

Shred the cabbage. The pieces should be very fine and you should be able to make around 8 cups. In a bowl, add the vinegar, oil, and sugar. Mix well until completely combined. Now pour the dressing over the shredded cabbage. Season with salt. Cover and leave in the refrigerator for at least a few hours. Stir before you’re ready to serve.
